Welcome to Unity in Healing, an ongoing conversation hosted by VeteransDesk.org, where we amplify the voices of veterans navigating their path to wellness through alternative treatments like medical cannabis. Most notably, Olivia reflects on a poignant moment of compassion and connection during her service that shaped her understanding of community, care, and the human spirit.
Olivia’s story begins with her time in the Gulf War, where she served during Operation Desert Storm. Like many veterans, she returned home with physical pain and emotional trauma that lingered long after her service ended. Diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Olivia experienced intense, chronic joint pain and fatigue that severely impacted her mobility and independence. Her condition, compounded by depression and PTSD, left her feeling increasingly isolated.
She describes the emotional toll of being prescribed prednisone for years—a medication known for both its effectiveness in reducing inflammation and its severe side effects. The weight gain, fogginess, disrupted sleep, and sense of emotional numbness left Olivia disconnected from herself and her environment. As traditional pharmaceuticals failed to provide long-term relief or improvement in her quality of life, Olivia began to feel that her options were running out.
While recounting her healing journey, Olivia shares a story that transcends medicine—a memory that reveals her enduring sense of compassion and purpose. In the early 1990s, during her the start of Desert Storm, Olivia received a late-night call from a young military wife whose child may have ingested toxic water from a clogged bathtub. Despite being strangers, Olivia responded immediately.
Upon arrival, Olivia found the mother breastfeeding her newborn while trying to manage two other small children. Olivia assisted in rushing them to the hospital. The child, it turned out, had potentially ingested water contaminated with Drano. The hospital mobilized a helicopter to transfer the child to Loma Linda Children’s Hospital. Over the following two days, Olivia stayed by the mother’s side through multiple surgeries until the woman’s parents arrived, facilitated by the Red Cross.
Though Olivia never learned the family’s name, the experience has stayed with her. It represents the essence of service, of being there for someone in crisis regardless of relationship or recognition. Her reflection on this moment reminds her that human connection and compassion are often the most powerful forms of healing.
Olivia’s story begins with her time in the Gulf War, where she served during Operation Desert Storm. Like many veterana Years after her military service, as her RA worsened and her depression deepened, Olivia found herself searching for an alternative. After learning more about medical cannabis through peer support and emerging research, she decided to give it a try. The results, she says, were immediate and transformative.
Within weeks of starting her treatment, Olivia experienced a significant reduction in pain, improved sleep, and a noticeable uplift in mood. She began to taper off her traditional medications, including prednisone. Unlike her previous treatments, cannabis provided relief without the emotional detachment and physical discomfort she had grown accustomed to. Most importantly, Olivia started to feel like herself again. Her energy returned. She found purpose and began reconnecting with her community. The medical cannabis didn’t just address her symptoms; it gave her back her agency and the ability to engage with life again.

Olivia’s story also highlights the complications veterans face when trying to access medical cannabis. Although many states, including Maryland, have legalized medical marijuana for specific conditions, federal regulations still prevent VA doctors from recommending or assisting with cannabis prescriptions. As a result, veterans like Olivia must navigate state-run systems independently, often without support or guidance from their primary healthcare providers.
Olivia worked closely with providers certified by the Maryland Cannabis Administration to develop a personalized treatment plan that considered her medical history and the complexities of managing chronic autoimmune disease alongside PTSD. She now advocates for more transparent policies and better support systems that allow veterans to explore medical cannabis safely and confidently.
Motivated by her experience, Olivia became a mentor within the VeteransDesk.org community. She dedicates time to speaking with fellow veterans who feel overlooked or overwhelmed by their medical challenges. She listens, shares her story, and encourages them to consider all treatment options—not just those covered by the VA. Her work underscores the importance of community support, making the audience feel connected and supported in their own health journeys.
Her work emphasizes the need for informed consent and patient choice. Olivia believes veterans deserve the freedom to explore effective therapies without fear of judgment or loss of benefits. Her advocacy is personal and practical: she helps others navigate the Maryland system, identify qualified providers, and find dispensaries prioritizing veteran care. This emphasis on informed consent and patient choice empowers the audience to take control of their health decisions.
